Introduction

Our vision is to create a friendly, safe and supportive environment where all students enjoy an excellent standard of teaching, access to a wide and challenging choice of courses and the guidance needed to ensure success.

The Sixth Form is managed by the Head of Sixth Form, a Deputy Head of Sixth Form and a Sixth Form Administrative Officer. There are eight Sixth Form tutor groups and whenever possible students will remain with the same tutor for two years.

When Year 11 students were asked what they consider important factors in selecting a Sixth Form the most common answers were:

“Staff who are willing to help you”
“Being treated like an adult”
“Getting the support you need to succeed”

At Cardinal Heenan the Sixth Form tutors play a crucial role in providing the support our students require.

Entry to the Sixth Form is open to students who have a genuine wish to continue their education beyond the age of sixteen. It is, however, not an automatic right. Students are expected to fulfil the entry requirements for those courses for which they opt and must sign a contract prior to admission.

We offer a wide range of subjects and take pride in our proven track record in terms of results.

In an analysis of results at Sixth Form level over the past three years the organisation “Advanced Level Performance Systems” placed Cardinal Heenan in the top 15% of state schools, nationally. This is an achievement of which we are justifiably proud. We believe that as a school we are flexible and forward-looking and that we respond well to the needs of all our students.

Whatever course a student decides to follow in the Sixth Form, we would stress that it will be a different education from Year 11. A greater responsibility will be placed on the student – we expect a more mature response to work – and in return she/he will be treated as a mature adult. Working with their personal tutors and teachers, working for themselves and their future, our students are encouraged to develop their full potential and so continue into higher education, further training or the employment of their choice.
