It’s Good to Talk…

Mental Health Charity State of Mind working with our 6th Form students in General RE

Mental Health Charity State of Mind visited the 6th Form students on Wednesday 10th January.  Visiting speaker Phil Veivers, an Australian former rugby league footballer who played for the Southern Suburbs, St. Helens and Huddersfield as a full-back led the sessions for our Year 12 and 13 students.  He was joined by Ian Knott, an English retired rugby league player who was active from 1993 to 2005. He played at club level for Warrington Wolves, Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, and Leigh Centurions (captain).

Both men bravely and openly shared their own experiences of how their mental health suffered due to pressures within their sport.  They challenged our students to consider what poor mental health looks like, what can trigger poor mental health and the signs to look out for.  They talked honestly about how it can affect family members and encouraged our students to talk about how they are feeling, a trait that is rare in males.
