Why Choose RSL Level 3 for Music Practitioners?
The Music Practitioner qualification is designed to provide vocationally-relevant education in contemporary music, aimed at beginners through to semi-professionals. Whether you are an aspiring performer, composer, entrepreneur or a combination of all of these you will have the opportunity to apply your creativity in a practically-focused setting.
As a learner you are able to follow one of the four specific pathways; Performance, Composition, Technology & Business. This allows learners the opportunity to undertake specialised learning that can be accurately matched to specific career sectors in the music industry. The array of optional units within the qualifications also allows learners to cover a range of aspects of the music industry, whichever pathway they select, reflecting the nature of employment within the music industry which often involves individuals undertaking multiple roles as part of a ‘portfolio career’ , many in a freelance capacity.
The qualification aims to offer practical structured learning with the flexibility to specialise in different disciplines directly relevant to employment within the music industry, including composition, performance, business and technology. The flexibility and range of unit choice are directly applicable to the music industry, where portfolio careers are the norm and those seeking employment often require knowledge and skills covering a breadth of relevant disciplines.
The Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma for Music Practitioners provide music industry qualifications that will equip learners with the skills, knowledge and understanding for entry to employment in the music industry or progression to further study at a higher level.
What Will I Learn & Study?
The course is split into two core units and a number of optional units. All learners will complete a core unit of work focussed on Planning for a Career in Music, the final core units will be decided by your chosen pathway. If you are a performer your second core unit will be Rehearsal Skills & Live Music Performance, this unit will help you effectively plan, prepare and perform a 15 to 20 minute performance. If you follow the composition pathway, your second core unit will be Composing Styles & Music Sequencing, in this you will use specific music software to compose a piece of music to a set assignment brief. Alongside both core units, students will complete a variety of ‘optional units’ that challenge all of your music abilities. There is a total of three optional units to complete ranging from Composing for Film & Documentary to Auditioning for Music.
How is the Course Assessed?
All learners undertake an internally assessed core unit (Planning a Career in Music). Learners will also undertake one externally assessed core unit which is relevant to their chosen pathway. All learners can select a number of optional units in order to develop their skills and understanding in areas relevant to their chosen pathway. The optional units are all internally assessed by your tutors. You will provide a portfolio of coursework that meets the needs of the assignment brief. The format of your work is flexible. You may choose to complete written work or you may decide to record a podcast, or even complete a video presentation. Your practical work will be completed using industry standard software. Compositions are created using appropriate Digital Audio Workstations and performances are recorded using Logic Pro X.
