Aims
The primary goals of the PE department are to ensure that all pupils:
- Develop competence to excel in a wide range of physical activities.
- Engage in competitive sports and activities throughout their time at the school.
- Are physically active for sustained periods of time.
- Lead healthy, active lives both in and out of school.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9)
At Cardinal Heenan, our Key Stage 3 PE curriculum is designed to develop confident, resilient, and physically literate students through a diverse and inclusive programme of study. We aim to foster a lifelong love of movement and sport while promoting teamwork, leadership, and personal well-being.
We deliver our curriculum through a wide range of activities, including: Gymnastics and Dance; Outdoor Education Football, Rugby, Handball, Basketball, Volleyball, Flag Football Fitness and Conditioning Badminton, Table Tennis, Pickleball Cricket Athletics, x country
Our approach focuses on:
- Progressive skill development across Years 7–9
- Building tactical awareness and decision-making
- Encouraging self-reflection and goal setting
- Promoting inclusion and full participation for all students
- Supporting physical and mental well-being through active lifestyles
Through this rich and varied curriculum, students gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to succeed in PE and beyond, preparing them for further study and lifelong engagement in physical activity.
Key Stage 4 Physical Education Curriculum
Our Key Stage 4 PE curriculum empowers students to refine their physical skills, deepen their understanding of sport, and embrace active, healthy lifestyles. We offer a dynamic and inclusive programme that balances practical performance with theoretical insight.
Our core PE offer includes:
- Fitness and Conditioning; Football; Basketball; Badminton; Athletics; Volleyball
Students participate in a range of activities designed to enhance physical competence, tactical awareness, and personal development. Lessons focus on advanced skill execution, team strategy, and maintaining lifelong physical well-being.
Cambridge Nationals in Sport Studies
In addition to core PE, students have the opportunity to opt for the Cambridge Nationals in Sport Studies, a nationally recognised qualification that blends practical sport with academic study.
This course includes:
- Units on contemporary issues in sport, sports leadership, and developing an awareness of outdoor and adventurous activities
- Exploration of the role of sport in society and its impact on health and well-being
- Assessment through both coursework and practical performance
- Preparation for further study or careers in sport, fitness, and health industries
This pathway is ideal for students passionate about sport and keen to explore its wider impact beyond the playing field and start their journey in to a career in sport.
Extra-curricular offer
We believe that sport and physical activity should extend beyond the classroom. Our extra-curricular programme offers students exciting opportunities to stay active, build friendships, and develop new skills in a fun and inclusive environment.
Our current sports clubs and activities include: Basketball; Badminton: Table Tennis; Fitness Training; Football; Athletics; Pickleball – our newest addition!
Whether students are looking to compete, improve their fitness, or simply enjoy being active with friends, there’s something for everyone. Sessions are open to all year groups and run before school and after school throughout the week.
We also offer opportunities to represent the school in local and national fixtures as well as tournaments and sports festivals ran by Liverpool School Sports Partnerships
