Students in Years 10 and 11 are following the new Edexcel linear GCSE specification (9-1) with first teaching in September 2015. Students' progress is closely monitored by teacher's assessments of both class and homework and also by using internal school tests during the academic year. The final GCSE grade is solely based on their performance in the GCSE exams at the end of Year 11.
There are two tiers of entry; Foundation (Grades 1 - 5) and Higher (Grades 4 - 9) with 1 being the lowest grade and 9 the highest grade. Students will be entered for the tier most appropriate for their ability and each consists of three written papers that are each 1 hour 30 minutes long. Paper 1 is a non-calculator paper and Papers 2 and 3 are with a calculator.
All students are required to have a Casio FX-85GTPLUS-SB-UH calculator. Students who are considering progressing to A-level maths may consider purchasing a Casio fx-991EX CLASSWIZZ calculator.
